Eating My Way Through the World: London Edition
The food in London requires a post of it’s own. If I had to sum the food in Great Britain in two words it would be “heavy” and “delicious.” Thank god for all of the walking I did, because I ate well!
First, I just want to discuss the set up of ordering food in pubs, because as an American it was very foreign to me. We learned really quickly what the deal was, because standing around awkwardly was not going to cut it!
When you enter a pub, or at least the pubs that we went to, here is the deal: Walk straight to the bar and order a drink, preferably beer or wine. You will not see a single soul drinking cocktails in London. My friend Ferocio and I ordered a cocktail once, and the bartender didn’t even know how to make it, even though it was ON THEIR MENU! Save yourself the embarrassment and go with beer!
After you order a drink, you pick your own table. At your table is a menu of the food, then you pick the dish you’d like, find your table number that is usually scrawled somewhere on the table, and go back up to the bar to order and pay for your food. It’s a unique situation if you’ve never been to London. I haven’t been too many places in Europe, so I don’t know if that is the norm.
I kept ordering fish and chips throughout the trip! It was so delicious, and less greasey and heavy than when you order it in America.
I don’t think this is necessarily indicative of the food in London, but this cheese dish was one of my favorites of the trip. We ate in a little pub by Kensington Palace after walking the whole of Hyde Park, and dipping these baguettes in hot cheese was the perfect end to a perfect day. I may have not eaten healthy in London but I certainly ate well!
