New York Karaoke at Duet 53

I feel like the last person on Earth to do Karaoke! I don’t know how I have spent 23 years on this Earth without doing it, I have been invited to plenty of Karaoke parties it just never worked out. I recently got invited to check out Duet 53 in New York, a new hot karaoke place in midtown, and I was determined to make it work!

They have a full bar which for New York prices, are not priced badly at all!

Duet 53 is in midtown, surrounded by hot restaurants and bars off 8th avenue. There are only private rooms, and I hear they are very upscale in comparison to the dingy rooms karaoke is usually hosted in. The doorman, as well as everyone working at Duet 53 is extremely nice! The lobby is very chic and features a full bar, where you are free to have a drink and wait for your party to arrive.

My man reading the catalog picking a song!

I was freakishly nervous! Not only was it my first time singing karaoke, but half of the attendees are in a professional acapella group- talk about pressure! I had agonized for weeks about what to sing, Britney, Madonna? Clearly it had to be something easy so that I would have a chance at singing along without total embarrassment. Do you have to stand up in front of people? Is everyone just silently watching you? It sounds silly but I honestly had no idea what to expect.

Karaoke is a HUGE big thing in Japan, so obviously this is a Japanese establishment.

The result was a hilarious and perfect night. The rooms are very small, but very modern and chic with a giant screen and two microphones. I knocked back a few to ease my nerves, and it ended up not being scary at all! We had a great time. I chose ‘Piece of Me’ by Britney Spears, one of her easiest talk-through-it songs, and my friend sang along with me to help ease my nerves. Everyone just passes the microphone along to the next person, most people are singing along with you, and others are chatting. The spotlight isn’t entirely on you the whole time which makes it easier!

It really did not take long for me to be comfortable.

I don’t know if this is the norm, but by the second hour a dance party had broken out. Everybody was up and singing and getting crazy, it was a complete blast. I picked ridiculous over-the-top pop songs like ‘Party in the USA’, ‘Me Against the Music’.

We had a great time at Duet 53- and I could not have asked for a more supportive karaoke crew for my first time!

I had so much fun doing Karaoke! I would highly recommend Duet 53 to anyone for their NYC karaoke experience!
