Shopping In the Haight
One of the first items on our list of things to do in San Fransisco was check out Haight-Ashbury, a district that seems entirely preserved from the 1960s. Our hotel was across the city from the Haight, which is just south of the Golden Gate bridge. Although we were on the west side of the city, Market Street cuts all the way across the city to Haight, and there are tons of ways to get there using public transportation! The public transportation in San Fran is incredibly easy to navigate and widespread, between the trolley, the buses, and the subway, your options seem unlimited.
As soon as we put our luggage down in the hotel, we ran over to the Haight to check out the shopping! Haight is technically a street that cuts through the city, but has taken over the city as it’s own district. The cross section of the streets Haight and Ashbury is a famous intersection, and this was the epicenter of the coutnerculture in the 1960s and 70s, and arguably still is today. In the 1960s, the district was referred to as the “Hashbury”, and was home to iconic groups such as The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin.
The area today is almost entirely preserved, art, murals, walls, and tye dye prevail in this district! All of the shops are small businesses, most of which have been there for decades, not to mention the vintage clothing shops which are incredible. You will not find a Starbucks on this street!! My friend mentioned that a few years ago Gap tried to put in a location there and was shut down immediately.
The shopping in this area is amazing! While vinyl isn’t my thing, you could spend hours in Ameoba records. Vintage clothing stores prevail in the Haight, and I had some stellar finds at the Buffalo Exchange location there! At the thrift store Wasteland, another popular spot, my friend and I drooled over the vintage Halston and Dior jackets. If you’re looking for the perfect Nicole Ritchie hippie dress, the Haight is your ticket!
My friend and I loved the Haight so much, we went back a second time during our short trip to shop some more! The stores are incredible, as well as the food, if you’re in San Fransisco, you definitely can’t miss it!!
