Go For it!

One of the many blogs I frequent is Adventurous Kate- a super fierce woman who travels by HERSELF backpacking around the globe!! Kate goes some amazing really exotic places, and I learn a ton from reading her blog everyday! In the last couple of weeks, she wrote a post encouraging others to get out there and travel, and I was so inspired, I would like to bring a little bit of my own ferocity on that subject to my blog! (Thanks Kate!)

Travel isn’t for everybody–and neither is this post. This post is for the people who think that adventure is out of their reach, that they can’t do it or their too busy or broke.

A gripe  in the travel-blog community is that people who don’t travel think that we are just a community of super lucky people who have bank accounts that money just randomly drops into anonymously. If I had a nickel for every time someone said, “You’re so LUCKY! I wish I could travel more!”

Here is what Adventurous Kate was getting at in her post.…YOU CAN!! There is just about as much problems, financial worry, loans, debt, and every other excuse you can possibly think of keeping me from traveling as their is plaguing you! It’s all about priorities.

I love designer labels, that is no surprise, but what may surprise you is how super frugal I am. Manis and pedis? Forget it! I have never had a massage or a facial in my life, I agonize for weeks about the money I have to spend on a haircut, and it literally took me a year to get my hair colored because I didn’t want to pay! I love shopping but I don’t make purchases easily.

That is because while I’m carrying a new pair of heels around Macy’s for an hour trying to decide if I really want to spend the $20.00, I’m thinking about how that money can be used for travel! I am agonizing about how every penny spent is one more penny that isn’t going towards my next trip.

Does this sound glamorous? Not at all, but money just doesn’t grow on a special travel tree in my backyard! I work hard for it, and travel is the way I like to spend it!! Every time I go on a trip, I freak out a little bit about money, I have bills like everyone else. However, every single trip is worth it, I have never regretted even a minute of any of my travels, no matter how broke I am when I come back.

Skip a mani or pedi once in a while or consider if you really need another night of endless drinks at an expensive bar, another sweater, or do you need to walk through Paris and see the Eiffel Tower in person? Do you need to go to India and marvel at the colors, sights, and sounds? We travelers are not lucky, we’re proactive.

Are you too busy? When I went to Paris I was a full time student working on my undergrad–and a full time supervisor at Starbucks. I woke up, commuted a half hour to school, went to school from 9am-5pm, ate dinner, worked 6pm-11:30pm, commuted a half hour home, did homework, slept, and did it all over again! I worked every weekend. I was so busy, exhausted, and was graduating that spring. But the need to travel is ever-present, so I went to Paris on my spring break!! It was the trip of a lifetime! Ask yourself what you’re working so hard for all this money for!! If you’re not doing what you have always wanted to do, then why are you working so hard? Why are you working at all?

Another common complaint I hear is that you may not have a travel companion, and people think I am very lucky to have a boyfriend who likes to travel. I AM very lucky that I have a boyfriend who loves to travel, but you know what? I once had a boyfriend who didn’t–and I went without him! Even my current man knows that if he decides not to go travel with me–by god I’m going without him!! What would happen if I didn’t have a great friend or two to take? I would go alone. Plenty of girls travel solo around the world everyday. Absolutely nothing will stop me.

The thing about travel is–there is never going to be a “right” time. If you’re waiting for the day when you have just the right amount of extra money and paid vacation days and no bills to pay and no stress in your life to plan a trip, I’m here to inform you that day is never, ever going to come. There will always be a new reason, illness, bill, unexpected expense, car problem, excuse. There will never be the perfect time–so why not just go?

Just go for it!!! New experience is what life is all about! We only have so much time here on this beautiful Earth, and we never know when our time is going to run out! That is what is brilliant about life, this urgency that your time might expire at any moment and you don’t even know it! Go now. Live this life to the fullest, it’s all that we have, it’s why we’re here!! There is such a lot of world to see…what are you waiting for??

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
